I am an award winning playwright and TV writer whose plays have been produced in New York and Russia. My spec script “Brick by Brick” for the HBO series DEADWOOD placed second at The Austin Film Festival because of its unique characters and original storytelling. I am also a member of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop. I teach dramatic writing and am a writing coach and dramaturge on-call for my friends.
I have three dogs, three cats and a star named OOOOOPS!
This blog is about transitioning to writing fiction as a full-time job. Writing is practice and I practice by writing this blog, but I also want to help other writers, creative professionals and entertain the non-writer reader.
In My Grand Plan posts you can follow my progress as I work to make writing my full-time job by building a writing platform, publishing short stories in commercial markets, finding an agent and publishing my first novel. I strive to explain what I am doing and why I am doing it.These posts will focus more on the business of writing.
Writing Practice posts contain writing prompts, ideas, and challenges that get my writer juices flowing and I hope will also help other writers and creative professionals. From time to time, I will include a craft exercise designed to help you understand a technique. Under this category is a monthly 50-word story challenge where each month 10 mini-prompts are thrown-up and you are challenged to write at least 3 stories based on the prompts and post them in the comments. I cannot stress enough the benefits of writing 50-word stories. It is why I made it a monthly feature.
Writing Craft posts are articles about craft. I have learned a lot over the years and have created my own methods of teaching what I know. My straight-forward, no-frills style of explaining what works for me, I hope will help other writers.
Adventures in Writing All bets are off on this one. This is where some of odd and crazy “projects” will start. What you will not see is my short stories or other writing because, it is not a good idea to post online any writing; long, short, fiction or non-fiction; that you plan to sell.
Writers on Writing posts will be quotes from writers that I find helpful to keep in mind. The are done as internet cards or memes. You may copy and share them, print them and tape them to your wall, or use them as your background on your computer, pad or phone.
Blog Events I run two events on this blog:
The 50-word Story Challenge – I monthy challenge to write at least three 50-word stories based on a set of 10 prompts. I will publish the stories on my blog at the end of each month.
PayItForward Friday – A weekly blogging event where you pretend to be a copywriter creating a guide book to the internet titled, “Best of the Blogosphere.”
